Subliminal Learning

After spending some quality time outside, I was made aware of a phenomenon called subliminal learning.

Subliminal learning is when one is taught to make a particular association without conscious thought. This is very similar to basic conditioning theories in psychology; however, I think of subliminal learning as a broader term. Subliminal learning encompasses conditioning, but also brand loyalty and other similar effects. “Brand loyalty” is a marketing term which refers to a customer preferring one brand of a product over others. This is often achieved using vague and generalized assertions or without the customer’s awareness. Read More…

How Men and Women Handle Their Problems

Walking ConversationPlease take the provocative title of this post lightly. I don’t mean to imply that all women think the same way, nor do I believe I know how all women think. What the title instead implies is that, though all people are different and gender differences are not as clearly defined as many people think, there are certain distinctions that are uniquely common to one sex over the other.

One of these is the way in which men and women tend to resolve their problems and relieve stress. Men and women often get into arguments, especially with their relationship partners, because of a common miscommunication: the woman will be explaining a problem she has and the man will interrupt her with a solution. Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?

This entry is a bit more personal. I usually like to leave my personal experiences out of my entries; however, I am not sure this topic relates to everyone. So, rather than place this idea in a general context, I decided to focus on my own life. You can let me know if you have similar experiences.

That being said, the focus of this entry is on univeral balance. I am not a superstitious person, nor do I have a set belief about God or religion. I consider myself to be a spiritual, yet rational person. Even so, I have noticed that, throughout my life, I seem to have some kind of guardian protecting me from harm. Any time I get into a difficult situation, I can be pretty sure that it will work itself out in the end. I may not get exactly what I want, and I may not get through it scath free, but I will get through it nonetheless. Read More…

Evolution

So it turns out that elephants not only bury their dead, but they often return to the grave site of loved ones, just like humans. Monkeys can learn to use tools, they make friends with each other, and can also hold grudges, just like humans. Many different types of species (including monkeys and elephants) can recognize themselves in a mirror.

What does this all mean?

My theory:
Animals are evolving! Who’s to say that one day monkeys, apes, elephants, dolphins, etc. won’t learn to reason and develop language? Maybe they’ll start learning to farm and raise livestock of their own. Maybe they will create their own colonies and countries. Read More…
