Well? Have you heard of the Gossip?
No, I’m not talking about the rumor mill. I’m talking about Gossip, the indie rock/punk band based in Portland, OR. Led by Beth Ditto, the band has been around since the turn of the century and recently signed with a major label (Sony Music Entertainment).
The band has a lot of rock, punk, and pop influences, but they have their own unique style. Here’s one of my favorite songs of theirs, “Pop Goes the World.”
Pop Goes The World – Gossip
But I don’t write this post just to advertise Gossip. After seeing this video, I was struck by a troubling thought (perhaps you felt the same thing): I believe it was the first time I’ve ever seen a heavyset female lead singer in any type of mainstream music video such as this one.
I thought, “How many female pop stars do I know that aren’t thin?” I came up with zero.
What’s that all about? I know for a fact that a singer’s talent has nothing to do with size, and I certainly know of plenty of heavier singers who are extremely talented.
So why aren’t any of them on TV?
As far as I’m concerned, Gossip’s “Pop Goes the World” is just as catchy and “pop-y” (if not more so) than most of the songs I hear on the radio over and over. And yet, I can never hope to hear the song play on any major pop station.
Why? Because the lead singer is too “fat.”
She is also openly gay, which certainly doesn’t help her chances.
Am I wrong? Let me know if you agree that Beth’s size is the only thing keeping her from being a main-stream success. I’m glad that, after about 9 years, Gossip finally was signed onto a major label, but how come they are the only ones?
::Thank you to Lesley of Fatshionista for opening my eyes to the band::
