What I Learned In China

Hey everyone!

Just got back from my trip out east and I must say it was pretty great. I traveled to Shanghai and Xi’an and wanted to go to Beijing as well, but there was just no time! Oh well, hopefully I’ll be back there again.

And since there just isn’t enough space here (nor do I have the energy!) to write down everything that happened, I figured I would give you a mini-sparknotes version of my trip. Naturally, you are more than welcome to ask for more info; however, I’ll at least give a list of the things I learned in China.

To be honest, I learned a lot. I learned about the country, about traveling, about the culture, and about myself as well. It was a great learning experience. And so, without further ado, here is what I learned from my trip to China:

Away in China!

Hi all!

So, I’m headed off to China. Not sure that I’ll have any access to internet once I’m over there, so you may not be getting any updated from me until I get back.

I’m bringing my ASL books with me though! :D

And hopefully I’ll have some great pictures and such to post up as well.

I’m flying back to the states on June 26.

Until then!

New Goal Chosen!

Congratulations!!

You all voted for a new goal and it has been chosen!

My new goal is *drum roll*: To Learn a New Language!

A big thanks to everyone who voted! I’m going to let you know by the end of the week all of the details (including what language I have decided to learn). If you have suggestions, by all means, send them along!

I’m looking forward to taking on this new challenge and I hope you are too (after all, you chose it)! And remember that you are still able to cast your votes for the next goal starting now, so get to it!

The Laundry List

As you may or may not have noticed, I have added a new section to the blog. It is titled the “Laundry List.”

The Laundry List is just a compilation of possible goals I can take on. They consist of both my ideas and yours. Using this list, you can see all of the different goals I may take on in the future. And if anything on the list is confusing to you or you just want to know more about what I’d be doing if the goal is chosen, head to the Laundry List Explanations Page to get the answers you want.

On the Laundry List you can also vote on a goal that you want me to take on next. The goal with the most votes will be the one I choose. Simple isn’t it? You get one new vote per day, so come back and vote again if there is something on there you really want me to do.

The Laundry List also has a segment where you can suggest new goals for me to take on. Just write in your suggestion and I will add it to the list (as long as it is somewhat reasonable/achievable).

The reason the Laundry List is not called a “bucket list” is because “bucket list” implies that I am trying to achieve all of these goals before I die. Though this is kind of true, I don’t like the idea that I have to be on my death bed in order to do what I’ve always wanted (and neither should you!)

Laundry List is a better term also because it conveys that this is something tossed together. These aren’t burning desires, just things that I think would be cool to try or do.

In any case, the Laundry List is going to stick around from now on and the votes are cumulative. This means that the goal you’ve been voting on that ended up in second place, moves to first place after I take on the previous first-place goal. Makes sense? In certain situations I may reset the vote count, but that will be a rare occurrence.

A Confession

I made a realization recently that I may have wronged, or otherwise confused all of you with what I have been saying here on Be The Change. Because of this, I would like to make a confession to you all. I admit that I have not been completely honest. Not in the sense that I have been lying to you, but in the sense that I have not told you the whole truth.

Using the assumed identity “Street Saint” grants me a kind of anonymity, but I may have been taking that too much to heart. The purpose of this site is, in a way, for me to spill my guts to all of you and tell you all of the pretty and ugly things I face when attempting to achieve my goals. And besides my Singles Awareness Day post I just recently published, I have been keeping vital information about myself from my readers. Read More…

One Hundred!!

Today is officially ONE HUNDRED DAY!!

Why you ask? Because today is filled with 100s!!

First off, this post is my 100th on this blog! I had no idea I’d written so much! :)

Secondly, today marks the halfway point of my very first goal: to find a life partner. The goal was set 100 days ago and there is currently 100 days remaining. This part isn’t really exciting so much as it is scary. Time is running out quick! Read More…

Why “Be The Change”?

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the pivotal words of Mahatma Gandhi, but if not, then consider this your much needed education. “Be the change” as a phrase has been a meaningful (and perhaps overused) saying ever since Gandhi’s death in 1948.

The words are a call (a demand perhaps) for people to be more accountable for their actions. To recognize how their choices can leave a huge effect on the people around them and the world. Everyone knows what qualities are seen as most desirable in people: respect, honesty, trust, compassion, patience, intelligence, just to name a few. Most people know what the “right” choice to make is, even if they decide to do the opposite. Read More…

More Updates

Only two days left until I return to Boston and start up the semester again. I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. Lots of great stuff planned!

As for Be the Change, it means I’m getting back to the goal game. I’m nearing the home stretch of my first goal and, at this point, odds do not look great for me. :(

However, I’m staying hopeful. I’m ending my semi-hiatus when I return, so I’ll be back to sending you all frequent updates of my progress. Also, I’m planning to take on another goal soon (perhaps early February), so be sure to check back for that! Read More…
