ASL, Week 4: Possessives

Sorry for the late update!  I’ve been super busy trying to organize my life a little bit that wasn’t able to write the update earlier.

That being said, I need to let you all know that I’ll be going to China this weekend!!  I’m so excited, but so unprepared!  I should be fine once I get my bags packed, though.  :P

And though I’m looking forward to the trip, it also means that I won’t be able to update you all on my progress (I doubt I’ll have any consistent access to the internet while I’m over there).  If I get a chance, though, I’ll certainly give you all an update!

Sign Language Update

Indicating Possession

But back to Sign Language.  Last week I learned the possessive pronoun forms: my, our, your, his, etc.  These were actually pretty easy to get because they are the same as the normal pronouns; however, you use an open hand instead of pointing.

Family Tree

Learning the possessive forms went hand-in-hand with learning the family tree, which I also did last week.  I already knew “Mother” and “Father,” but that was about it.

Now that I know how to indicate possession, I was able to make sentences like, “She is my mother,” and “I am his brother.”  It made me really excited to start creating more cohesive sentences.

Agents

The last new thing I learned was using the “Agent” sign.  This sign is really great because it can change verbs into occupations.  For example, by adding “Agent” after the word “Teach” you indicate that someone is doing the teaching.  In other words, “Teach” plus “Agent” means “Teacher.”

This is really great for learning professions because all I have to do is add “Agent” to say that this is a person’s job.  Some examples I learned this time was “Dance” to make “Dancer,” “Cook/Bake” to make “Chef/Baker,” and even “America” to make “American.”

I really enjoyed learning to use “Agent” because it opens up the door to a lot of new words and phrases.
