Why “Be The Change”?

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
-Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the pivotal words of Mahatma Gandhi, but if not, then consider this your much needed education.  “Be the change” as a phrase has been a meaningful (and perhaps overused) saying ever since Gandhi’s death in 1948.

The words are a call (a demand perhaps) for people to be more accountable for their actions.  To recognize how their choices can leave a huge effect on the people around them and the world.  Everyone knows what qualities are seen as most desirable in people: respect, honesty, trust, compassion, patience, intelligence, just to name a few.  Most people know what the “right” choice to make is, even if they decide to do the opposite.

I understand that no one is perfect (nor do they need to be); although it has always been my mission to help people see the flaws in their actions and choices.  Just about everyone has characteristics that are not ideal and would take a lot of effort and time to correct or improve.  That being the case, I am always shocked when people refuse to correct even the easy fixes in their nature.  Example: Everyone knows it’s bad to litter… so why do it?  That’s an easy change to make, but people still disregard it.

I chose the title, Be The Change because I wanted it to serve as a constant reminder of all the little ways we can change for the better, not just the large and difficult ways.

Remember that you help to make the world the way it is, no matter how little or insignificant your life may seem.  Think of all the terrible things that happen in the world (conflict/war, slavery, deception, environmental destruction, etc.).  Each and every one of those issues could be corrected if people acted in the way that they already know is more ideal.

And so when you visit Be The Change from now on, I hope that you’ll consider the changes you can make in your life and make the choice to give it a shot.

Because even a small change can make a world of a difference.  :)
