A Cappella Fest

As planned, Moe, our friend Ziva, and I went to A Cappella Fest.  Overall it was a great event, though it was different than I was expecting.

We were informed that the doors opened at 7:30, so that’s when we planned to arrive.  It was a frigid outside and we had to walk a few blocks from where the train dropped us off to get to the synagogue.  However, when we arrived, all of the doors were locked.  We checked our watches which read “7:28.”  They couldn’t possibly leave us out in the cold just because we came 2 minutes too early.  We tried to get the attention of the people inside, which proved difficult.

Eventually someone came to open the door for us, and he pointed the second entrance out to us, which would have led us right to the ticket counter.  Oops…

After that minor embarrassment, we made our way to the correct entrance, picked up our tickets, and waited for the actual performance doors to open.  I felt like the odd person out since Moe is planning on converting to Judaism and Ziva is already Jewish.  Ziva suggested that I wear a kippah, as is traditional for Jewish men to wear in the sanctuary.  I don’t know that this disguised the fact that I am not Jewish (though it was not necessary that I be), but it’s always fun to assume an identity.

In regards to the performances, I guess we should have known from the location that the event would be geared toward a Jewish audience.  We figured some of the groups would have Jewish backgrounds, but we were surprised to find that that most of the groups were either Jewish identifying or sang Jewish songs (or both).  Not that this took away from the performances in any way, but it did catch us off guard.

Overall, the performers were quite good.  Most notably, though, was the group named “Women of the World.”  The all female group, consisting of seven (though only five were present), diversely ethnic women, was absolutely sensational, earning a standing ovation from the audience.  I myself was howling with applause.  Women of the Wold comes from Berklee College of Music and I highly recommend you find some way to see a performance of theirs.

Another element of the event that the three of us were not expecting was the length.  After two and a half hours, we found ourselves at only the intermission.  We were all expecting the event to last only that long, so we debated whether we should stay for the whole performance or just leave then.  Seeing as if we stayed we’d probably be there until midnight, we decided to head home early.

All in all, I’d say the trip was a great success.  After all, none of us were bored and we all had fun.  Seeing as those were the only two requirements (besides staying sober, which we also did), it was indeed a success!  It sure beat staying in all night.

Looking forward to next week’s event!

    The show was fabulous, indeed.

I have tried to find future performance dates for Women of the World, but have not had luck as of yet. I sent a Facebook message to a person whom I believe is one of the members, so, hopefully all will turn out well and we’ll have the pleasure of hearing them again.

    Great post!

If you click the link in the post, that will take you to the Women of the World myspace page. They have a list of upcoming shows there.

Thanks for the comment, Moe! I’d love to see them again.
