Equilibristics, or balancing acts, is the discipline within the circus arts which requires a lot of… well, balance. Equilibristics comes from the word “Equilibrium” which refers to a state of balance between opposing forces. Equilibrium (in case you were curious) comes from the Latin aequilibrium: aequus meaning “equal,” and libra meaning “balance.”

Equilibristic skills clearly require a lot of balance, but they can also call for a number of other skills as well. Depending on what act you are performing, you may also need a significant amount of strength, endurance, flexibility, body control, spacial awareness, and/or a quick reaction speed.
