One of these days I’ll get a camera and take video of what I’m doing. Until then, I can just tell you that I’m working on some new and exciting stuff with the staff.
It was an absolutely fabulous day outside, so I took advantage of it and did some practice. I’ve been trying to learn something new every time I go out with the staff and so far I’ve been having luck with that.
This particular time, I got the fundamentals down for two new staff tricks: head spins and neck locks.
If you are not sure what a “head spin” is, check out this video on it. Quite simply, it’s when you spin the staff on top of your head. I had always been afraid to attempt it because there is a large risk that the staff slips off and slams you pretty good in the face (which did indeed happen a few times…). However, I did manage to get the trick down and I can comfortably get a few spins in on the head.
After working on some head spinning tricks, I started to work out some possible transfers and combinations. I was able to go from a head spin to a palm spin pretty easily (and improved my palm spinning technique in the process). Then, for whatever reason, I decided to try a body roll (which failed), so I moved on to a shoulder wrap. I couldn’t quite get the shoulder wrap, but in my attempt, I managed to move from the shoulder to the neck.
In doing so, I was able to (somewhat) master the Neck Lock. I was extremely excited because I had never been able to get the contact moves down. The neck lock seemed to open up a whole new can of worms, and I’ve already started to try out some variations.
And that’s about all I can think to say, other than the fact that, as I type this, I am icing my elbow which I managed to slam pretty hard at some point.
All in a day’s work, I suppose…
