One of my ultimate goals in life is to fly.  And I don’t mean in an airplane either.  I mean real, unadulterated flight.  The kind that superheros do (my other goal is to be a superhero, but I won’t get into that now).

In any case, it’s something I continue to work on.  Scientists tell me it is a physical impossibility, but scientists also said the Earth was flat and look where that landed them.

Since I can’t fly for real just yet, I’ve decided to try everything and anything that is in any way similar.  For example, I go snowboarding, I love roller-coasters, I roll down hills, swing on the flying trapeze… anything that gets the wind going through my hair (or lack thereof).

One of the activities I take part in is Quidditch.  You may be thinking, “Quidditch?  Like from Harry Potter?”  Yes.  Quidditch like from Harry Potter.  I do it.  I love it.

And before you ask, no we don’t actually fly on brooms.  We’re muggles (non-magic users).  We play Muggle Quidditch.  And since we can’t fly on brooms properly, we run with them between our legs.  Laugh all you want, but Quidditch is not a sissy’s game.  In fact, people really get hurt out there.  One guy broke his collar bone.  True story.

Me with the quaffle

But I don’t love Quidditch for the injuries.  I love it for the flight.  You may be thinking, “But you just said you don’t actually fly.”  It’s true, let me explain.

You may also be thinking, “Stop putting words into my thoughts!”  My appologies…

I play the position of seeker, like the great Harry Potter himself.  The snitch is not a little golden ball with wings, instead it is a person wearing a golden shirt.  My job is to hunt him down and catch him, scoring 30 points for my team and ending the game.  It consists of a lot of running and sprinting and wrestling (because the snitch likes to put up a fight).

However, while I’m out there running with a broom between my legs, I can’t help but fantasize that I actually am up in the air, hovering above everything.  It’s a truly rewarding experience.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you all to contact your local Quidditch league and join the fun.  Don’t have a Quidditch league nearby, you say?  Start one up!  Everybody loves Quidditch!

For more about Quidditch and the league I play in, check out the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association.
