I’m excited about all of the new projects I am working on.  There are a lot of performances coming up, which is exciting.  Unfortunately, it means there is also a lot of work preparation-wise.

First off, I am rehearsing for a showcase for this coming Saturday.  It is with my performing arts troupe Gumbo Yaya.  We primarily perform for school-age children; however, we are hosting a special performance this weekend and opening it up to our college community.  The two shows we are working on are called “Bowling for Friends” and “Rabbit and Harpy,” both original plays performed only by our troupe.

This weekend has been pretty looming in terms of our preparation.  We have both shows down for the most part; however, we are still struggling to fix loose ends and tighten both so that they are performance ready.  I feel as though most performances have to come together almost at the last minute.  At least, it has been the case for me on multiple occasions.

What is especially exciting about this performance is that I will also be performing a one-man show.  Since we have our venue for the whole day, we’ve gotten some other performers to fill in some intermission time.  One of those performers is me!

I will be doing a short juggling demonstration as well as some staff juggling.  Nothing too fantastic, since the space doesn’t really allow for much in the way of circus performance.  However, I am looking forward to the show.

Preparation

I have been readying myself for the show by practicing whenever I have a free moment.  The performance will be largely improvised, but I want to have a solid skeleton of what I plan to do.  Although, I will have as long as an hour of time to kill, so I can take things slow.

I’ve finally gotten to creating a list of skills I know for staff.  A lot of them don’t really have names, but I’ve just given myself an idea so that I can remember what it is I can actually do!  It’s hard to remember when you’ve begun to learn a host of different tricks.

The very next week, I have another performance; though of vastly different nature.  My a cappella group, called Acappellics Anonymous, will be putting up a show.  Though we focus mainly on our songs, we also like to add a performance aspect to the show.  This time, our performance will be loosely based off of the television series “Glee” about a high school glee choir.

The show also needs a lot of work before it is performance ready.  Like I said, these things tend to come together last minute.  I am especially excited about the show because I will be performing the solo for my own arrangement of John Legend’s “Refuge (When it’s Cold Outside).”  We will also perform two other songs I arranged: “Hotel Song” by Regina Spektor and “Tearin’ Up My Heart” by N’Sync.  I’m really looking forward to the whole thing and I hope it goes well.

Sunday, 12.20.09

Finally, I will be performing in Simply Circus’ Winter Showcase.  I have been taking classes at Simply Circus, a circus school, for several months now.  Since the end of the semester is approaching, we are now starting preparation for our end of the year performance.  I’m still not 100% sure what exactly I’ll be doing in the show, but rehearsals begin tomorrow, so we will decide that fairly soon.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

And there you have it.  Lots on my plate, but I welcome every bit of it.  They say you have to love what you do, so I must be doing something right.
